Garfinkel Immigration Law Firm Partner William Hummel recently authored the foreword in the 2023 ICLG Corporate Immigration Laws and Regulations guide.
The guide, which was released in late June 2023, addresses common issues in corporate immigration laws and regulations in various countries around the globe — including compliance, investment work permits and dependents.
Hummel, who is the current chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Global Migration Section (GMS), discussed numerous topics in the foreword including GMS membership, opportunities for professional development as well as global immigration trends in 2022-23.
“Global mobility has demonstrated its resilience and innovation, despite a pandemic and humanitarian conflicts and crises over the last few years,” Hummel wrote in the foreword. “The continued movement and transfer of people despite these unexpected challenges, I believe, is due to the innovation of immigration practitioners around the world. Our clients have continued to demand a high level of service even in ever challenging times and global migration practitioners have and are prepared to continue to provide this service. Key to the success within our area of practice is having a network of connections and relationships across the globe to use as a resource.”
Hummel also analyzed the impacts of remote work on global migration.
“The expansion of this remote work force has created even more complex questions related to immigration compliance, tax, social security benefits, etc.,” Hummel wrote. “Human resource professionals are struggling to balance the expectations of a labor force wanting remote work options with the difficulties of administering and remaining compliant with telecommuting workers. Adding even more complexity are government agencies that ask questions about the need for visas for individuals within a certain jurisdiction when the individual will telecommute.”
Hummel continued: “It is imperative for those of us in the global migration sector to work with corporate clients to establish policies on remote work to avoid unintended consequences for both companies but also the employees on assignment around the world.”
ICLG “is a leading global platform for legal reference, analysis and news, hosting comprehensive comparative legal guides and research tools that cover law in more than 177 jurisdictions across 58 practice areas,” according to its website. The organization’s “external authors and information sources are selected only from the leading legal and business authorities, positioning them as the clear choice for readers to engage with in order to meet their legal and business information needs.”
